Baby Diarrhea: Causes, Treatment and More

Jul 13 , 2020

Newborns are sensitive and parents try their best to keep an eye on any unusual activity when it comes to their babies. Tiny changes can turn into serious health problems so it is important to keep an eye on the baby’s health but doesn’t necessarily mean you have to panic.

Diarrhea is common in babies and you may not be able to understand the difference by looking at the stool as the normal baby poop is soft and loose.

Here is how you can know if your baby has Diarrhea:

  • Watery poop
  • Frequent passing of stools
  • Not peeing enough
  • Unusual drowsiness for no reason
  • Symptoms of dehydration
  • Acting fussy or irritable
  • No tears when he cries
  • Sunken soft spot on the top of the baby’s head
  • Skin that isn’t as elastic as usual (doesn’t spring back when you gently pinch and release it)

  • If you notice these symptoms, you can take your baby to the doctor or consult with a healthcare professional.

Here are the possible causes of Diarrhea:

  • A minor infection may be bacterial or viral and may have entered through contaminated food.
  • A result of food allergy or sensitivity
  • Consumption of dairy products like milk
  • Food poisoning

The best way to take care of your baby if he has diarrhea is by giving him/her plenty of fluids as they can get dehydrated easily. The doctor may suggest you to feed fluids with electrolytes and minerals as the body tends to lose essential electrolytes when dehydrated.

Keeping an eye on your baby will help you understand what you should do. If your baby is less than 3 months old and has been vomiting too, it is best to call your doctor to understand the cause.  Also keep the diaper-changing area clean and disinfected. Keep your child home from day care until he is completely recovered.
