Side Effects of Energy Drinks on Teenagers

Studies show that many teenagers consume energy drinks on a regular basis which contain sugar, caffeine, additives and L-carnitine, taurine, and guarana. These stimulants are known to improve attention, alertness, and energy which is why most teenagers drink it to stay up late at night or to feel energized. But is it safe for them? Lets find out its effects on teenagers. 

  • Sleep issues 

As per a report, teenagers who regularly drink energy drinks might have a risk of developing sleep issues, poor learning, and poor performance. As these drinks contain caffeine, which might lead to insomnia, short sleep, and sleeping sickness. 

  • Dehydration

Energy drinks contain guarana, caffeine, creatine, ginseng, taurine, and different vitamins and minerals. A mixture of all these substances can lead to dehydration.  Also, caffeine is a diuretic that causes the body to lose water. 

  • Cardiovascular  disease

In one serving, an energy drink can have up to 500mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to 14 cans of caffeinated soft drinks. These amounts of caffeine cause cardiovascular issues including high heart rate. 

  • Tooth decay 

Energy drinks contain citric acid, which is highly corrosive to teeth. The drinks contain citric acid and sugar, which can cause demineralization and tooth decay.

  • Bad behavior 

Studies state that high consumption of energy drinks might lead to other unhealthy habits in teenagers like drugs, smoking, and alcohol.
