We had a nuclear family and my inlaws stayed in Mumbai but recently we have shifted back. Things are different and we are struggling with it but fortunately, I am blessed with amazing inlaws so it isn’t that difficult. But after shifting I realized that since my four-year-old son had never stayed with his grandparents(both maternal and paternal) so its little difficult for him to bond with them. This is when I realised that its parents’ responsibility to help their kids bond with their grandparents. Creating a bond between them wasn’t that difficult that’s why I decided to share the tips and tricks which helped us.
Sleeping with their grandparents
Allow them to sleep with their grandparents as they enjoy narrating bedtime and sharing stories to about their childhood and other memories which helps them connect to each other.
Family dinner
During family dinner, kids share their whole day activity with a great zeal which encourages bonding between your children and their grandparents. You can even encourage your children to help their grandparents prepare a dish for the occasion. For me its always a pleasure for me to see when my kids hold their grandparent’s hand during the night walk post dinner.
Indoor games
I always suggest my kids to play indoor games with family members, especially with their grandparents during their free time. Indoor games like Ludo, chess, snake ladder etc. keep kids and grandparents busy and give them some bonding time too.
Family albums
Pictures have always been the best way to capture the best memories of our life. I suggest you to take out family albums and give it to them to see and every picture has some story and you would love to see when you parents narrate it to your kids.
Talk
Talk to your kids about bonding with their grandparents. Explain to them why it’s important for you and your grandparents. Secondly, make sure you talk about tangible benefits appropriate to their age and developmental stage.
