How to Deal with a Hernia During Pregnancy

Pregnant women are at increased risk of developing hernia due to the pressure being exerted by the fetus on the abdomen. The hernia can be seen externally as a bulge under the skin, mostly under the groin or lower abdomen. This may or may not be a serious problem during your pregnancy, depending on your condition and if it is causing any trouble. Here is what you should know. 

Symptoms of hernia 

It is not necessary that women who develop hernia will surely experience symptoms but if you are suspecting it, here are the possible signs. 

  • Unexplained nausea 
  • Sudden pain in the lower abdomen
  • Pain in the abdomen when walking too fast 
  • A bulge tuning, red, purple or pink
  • Difficulty passing stool 

Treatment of hernia during pregnancy 

The doctor may or may not decide to operate on your hernia depending on your condition. If your symptoms are not too intense or problematic then your doctor will ask you to wait until after the delivery. If your hernia is adding any compilation to your pregnancy or is trapped then emergency surgery may be required. 

Risk factors 

Women are at higher risk of developing hernia during pregnancy and this can happen due to various reasons. Here are the main reasons. 

  • Multiple pregnancies 
  • Family history 
  • Age factor 
  • Chronic constipation 
  • Moving heavy objects
